Reading Back a Heading and an Altitude
Two of the most common required readbacks — do them right and you sound instantly sharp on the radio. · 5 min read
Assigned headings and altitudes are the bread and butter of talking to a radar controller. Any heading you are told to fly (a vector) and any altitude you are told to climb or descend to must be read back, so the controller can hear with their own ears that you copied the numbers correctly. This is not busywork — it is the safety net that catches a mis-heard "four thousand" before it becomes a "fourteen thousand," or a "heading zero-one-zero" that you heard as "one-one-zero." Under flight following and especially IFR these come constantly, sometimes several in a minute, so the goal is to make them automatic and crisp.
An altitude assignment
Read back the action and the number. "Climb and maintain" or "descend and maintain," then the altitude:

Read back the turn direction and the three-digit heading. You can drop the word "turn" but keep the direction so the controller knows you are turning the right way:

Often you get a heading and an altitude in one transmission. Read them back in the same order you heard them, then your callsign:
Why the numbers matter
The single most important habit here is reading back the specific numbers rather than a vague "roger" or "wilco." A "roger" tells the controller you heard something; a full readback tells them you heard the right thing. If your readback is wrong, they will catch it and correct you on the spot — which is exactly the point. That two-second exchange is what keeps two airplanes from being assigned the same altitude.
